Clinical Significance

Serum creatinine is useful in the evaluation of kidney function and in monitoring renal dialysis. A serum creatinine result within the reference range does not rule out renal function impairment: serum creatinine is not sensitive to early renal damage since it varies with age, gender and ethnic background. The impact of these variables can be reduced by an estimation of the glomerular filtration rate usingÿan equation that includes serum creatinine, age and gender.

Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR) has been update to the 2021 CKD-EPI calculation as of 10/25/2023.

Chronic Kidney Disease Epiemiology Collaboration (2021 CKD-EPI) calculation:

eGFRcr= 142 x min(Scr/K, 1)α x max(Scr/K, 1)-1.200 x 0.9938Age x 1.012[if female]

  • Scr = standardized serum creatining in mg/dL
  • k = 0.7 (females) or 0.9 (males)
  • α = -0.241 (female) or -0.302 (male)
  • min(Scr/k, 1) is the minimum of Scr/k or 1.0
  • max(Scr/k, 1) is the maximum of Scr/k or 1.0
  • Age (years)
