Specimen Type

A morning deep cough specimen of sputum collected in a sterile screw-cap container (i.e. urine cup). Sputum should be collected before antibiotic therapy if possible. Avoid saliva contamination. Contaminated specimens will be rejected by lab staff and need to be recollected.

Specimens should be refrigerated after collection. Specimen must be delivered to laboratory within 2 hours of collection.
