Clinical Significance

Semi-quantitative determination of ketone bodies in the blood is a helpful guide in the treatment of ketonemia associated with diabetes mellitus. Excess production of ketone bodies in the diabetic leads to ketoacidosis with a decrease in plasma pH and bicarbonate.
